A-C MOTOR EXPRESS got the first part of its name from a sign
advertising a spark plug. The "A-C" sign was located at a gas
station owned by Christy George Nekitopoulos. Christy would
transport freight in his Buick to help local truck drivers make
their deliveries. He soon realized he could do better for
himself in trucking and went into business with his brother
Ernest in 1933.
True to its name, the refrigerated less-than-truckload carrier
has continued to spark new business over the years by providing
speedy, reliable service, says John Christy Nekitopoulos, Jr.,
general manager. Nekitopoulos is the grandson of the company
founder, Christy Nekitopoulos, and the son of the company owner,
John Nekitopoulos, Sr.
Over the past two years, the West Springfield, Massachusetts
company has added 12 trailers and nine tractors to provide for
increased service demands in the New England region. Until 1983,
A-C Motor Express was strictly a Massachussetts carrier. Since
then, it has expanded to neighboring states.
"Six to seven years ago, our business in Connecticut, Rhode
Island, New Hampshire and Vermont was limited," John Christy
Nekitopoulos Jr., says. "Now, we cover those areas daily."
A-C Motor Express has a fleet of 29 tractors, 47 refrigerated
trailers (predominantly 46 footers) and seven refrigerated
straight trucks to provide daily pick-up and delivery service
throughout New England. About 90% of the freight the company
handles is LTL; the remaining 10% is truckload.
"We provide our customers a lot of expedited service (same-day
delivery)," Nekitopoulos says. "Our basic service is next day
delivery, and customers know they can rely on us."
Food processors, restaurants, and grocery wholesalers are
demanding faster delivery as they strive to achieve just-in-time
inventories, Nekitopoulos adds. They turn to A-C Motor Express
because the company has built up a reputation for providing
overnight service.
The core business for A-C Motor Express is "expedited service"
produce runs. The LTL carrier makes daily runs Monday through
Friday between Springfield and Boston, picking up and delivering
freight within the same day. Produce represents approximately
30% of the freight the company handles.
