Boucher joined A-C Motor Express in 1971. Three-Bay Shop A-C Motor Express owns its fleet equipment and services all the trucks, tractors, and trailers in a three bay shop. The LTL carrier maintains the fleet for long life. Average model year of tractors is 1986. Mack is the exclusive supplier of all power units. Trailers in the A-C Motor Express fleet are supplied by Great Dane and Trailmobile. Newer trailers are 1991 Great Dane 48 x 102 stainless steel models. "We are gradually replacing 46-foot trailers with 48 footers to provide more cube," Nekitopoulos says. Three mechanics work in the shop. Two mechanics specialize in trailer work and the third is a former driver for A-C Motor Express who works mostly on tractors and trucks. About two-thirds of the work the shop performs is for outside trucking and truck leasing companies. Work for outside carriers is performed to subsidize the shop. The shop does all preventive maintenance on trucks, tractors, and trailers and performs most repairs except engine and body work. A-C Motor Express sends engine work to several authorized Mack service providers in Western Massachusetts. A local truck fueling company refuels A-C Motor Express tractors, trucks, and refrigeration units each night. Tires on all vehicles are checked nightly by an A-C Motor Express employee. Fleet equipment is washed inside and out once a week by an outside company and daily by A-C Motor Express employees, if needed. Trucks and trailers are equipped with various Thermo King refrigeration units, induding SB-II and Sentry trailer units and RD-I truck body units. Thermo King service technicians come to the A-C Motor Express terminal every Saturday to check all refrigeration units and perform needed maintenance. Thermo King provides 24 hour service, when necessary. Preventive maintenance helps ensure that trucks, tractors, and trailers are available to make runs whenever they are needed. A-C Motor Express strives to provide top-notch customer service, Nekitopoulos says. "We have trucks available for expedited service 24 hours a day," he says. "When dispatchers aren't available to take calls at the terminal, the dispatch line rings at my house. We're small enough to offer personalized service, and we want to remain that way. That's why we don't plan to expand our geographic service area." December 1995 27
